Like Main Street, only more relaxed
If the madness of Main Street is too over-the-top for you, the cure is as close as Mary Bethune Boulevard a few miles west. It's there, in the shadow of Bethune Cookman University, that the gathering known as Black Bike Week has grown up. The numbers have been growing here in recent years, and both sides of the street are packed with bikes pulled up on the curb for more than two blocks, and strong parade of bikes is going by. But still, the vibe is much more relaxed, much more family-oriented, and in general, much cooler than downtown. "For me, this is the place to be," says Ted "Ghost" Banks, who rode up with friends from Fort Pierce for his fifth Bike Week. "Downtown, you burn up your clutch going one block. Here it's just better."
