Spies gets Superstock
This is exactly why Ben Spies is the defending AMA Superbike Champion. Running in the AMA Superstock race, Spies finds himself in the lead after holeshotting the first corner, chased by Geoff May and Ben Bostrom. The three quickly open up a gap, and it's decision time. A less-experienced rider might just stay in front and push hard, trying to shake off his pursuers. Not Spies. When May takes the lead exiting the horseshoe on the third lap, Spies just tucks in behind to see what will happen. Over the course of the mid-race, he lets May burn up his tires, while Bostrom cruises behind him. After watching for 10 laps, with three laps to go, Spies cooly drafts to the front across the start-finish line and checks out to win by a margin of 2.8. Bostrom, caught out when Spies made his pass, overtakes May with two laps to go to finish second. ``I just let him pull us around and waste his tire,'' Spies says afterward. ``When you're pulling the train, it just makes your tires work harder. I waited until the right time and made the move.''
