Blue on top in Superbike qualifying
There's a new sheriff in town, and he's from Texas.
In AMA Superbike qualifying Thursday, it was Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies who came out on top, notching a fast lap of 1 minute, 37.546 seconds, edging out teammate Mat Mladin by less than 4/100s of a second. Mladin laid down a 1:37.581 lap time
"We can go faster," Spies said. "We left a few tenths on the track, for sure."
Third on the grid is Yamaha's Eric Bostrom (1:28.195), with Kawasaki's Roger Lee Hayden taking the final spot on the front row for Saturday's race with a 1:28.789.
It was the two Suzukis on top for virtually all of the qualifying session, with Spies setting the early top time, and Mladin notching quickly into second-place. Mladin briefly held the provisional pole, but it was only a few mintues before Spies again set the faster time, and that held through to the checkers.
