A rare gem on the block at the AMA auction

These don't come along very often.

But there it is, sitting front and center at the AMA Antique and Classic Auction by J. Wood & Co. at the Stetson Center in Deland: an ultra-rare Harley-Davidson XR750 road-racing machine.

And standing nearby is none other than one of the guys from the famed H-D race department that put it together: legendary tuner Bill Werner.

Turns out that the machine was put together as a gift to Dick O'Brien, the famed H-D race director through the 1960s and '70s. Now it's being sold by his daughter. By tracing serial numbers, Werner says they know the engine had actually been raced by Cal Rayborn. Some were suggesting the bike might bring six figures.

Also available at the auction were several race uniforms put on the block by Werner himself.

"I figured we'd sell them now and use the money to help fund Jay Springsteen's race program!" Werner said.

The auction was expected to wind up Thursday. We'll have a complete list of items sold and prices next week.
